The Holiday Season Is Here

It seems that the weather has taken note that Thanksgiving has come and gone. As of Monday, our temperatures dropped about 10 degrees, and we have plunged into the gray rainy German winter again. I loved the 3-4 weeks we had during November to still enjoy the sun and relatively warm temperatures (40s-50s). This time last year, we had already had two snows!

With the exception of Friday’s office frustration (read: not being able to work at the office), we had a wonderful weekend. Wednesday night, we enjoyed a beer at a local Irish pub and watched a few soccer games. Thursday was Thanksgiving (yum). Friday was a work day and we also got some errands done in the afternoon. Saturday we did our grocery shopping (1 day early), stopped by the Arts & Crafts store, and did some shopping at the PX. We also put up our very first Christmas tree as a family. We had one in 2007, but we weren’t a family yet, so we don’t really count that. The tree has lights on it and is fully decorated! Granted, it came with lights already on it – it’s a fake tree, but we decided it’s a better financially and we could put up the tree earlier without having to have a dying tree come Christmas day.

While we decorated the tree, we listened to Christmas music and drank eggnog. Fun!

Sunday, I taught myself some new stitches with knitting. We got knitting needles on Saturday, so I was eager to try them out. I practiced my knit stitch a bunch and then switched to the purl stitch. Somehow I went from 30 loops around the needle (whatever the loops are called) to 48. I think I messed up 🙂 Oh well, practice makes perfect!

Saturday afternoon, we went to see Planet 51. It was cute but not quite as good as we had hoped/expected. After dinner (finishing up the last of our Thanksgiving leftovers), we headed to the Heidelberg Weihnachtsmarkt. It was so nice to have a Christmas market experience where we weren’t freezing cold! I didn’t even have to wear my fur-lined boots.

We moseyed around, had a couple bananas dipped in chocolate, glüwein, and crepes with cheese, pineapple and ham. Unfortunately, we think there was something wrong with the crepes. We both had a touch of food poisoning from about midnight Sunday night through Monday morning – John got it worse than me, and we think it’s because he ate his whole crepe, and I only had about 1/4 to 1/3 of mine. Ugh!

Oh no! Sorry about your food poisoning – that sucks. 😦 Which crepe stand was it?

Thanks. It was at the stand by the ice skating rink. Blech.
